Orto-Tokoy Reservoir

Orto-Tokoy sits on the Chu river where the road from Bishkek turns south toward Kochkor and Naryn, an irrigation reservoir held between rounded hills with almost no vegetation, which makes the intense blue of the water against brown and ochre slopes the whole point. There is a viewpoint on the road above it where drivers stop, and tracks lead down to the shore for fishing and swimming. In dry years the level falls a long way and exposes wide pale margins. It is a stop of twenty minutes rather than a destination, but it comes at a useful point in a long drive, and the colour contrast is genuinely striking in clear weather.

When to go

May to September for colour and for shore access. Water levels are highest in early summer. In winter the reservoir freezes and the road can be icy. Midday sun gives the strongest blue.

Practical notes

It is a roadside stop and nothing more; there are no facilities beyond occasional stalls. The shore is bare and windy. Levels drop substantially by late summer, which changes the look considerably. Traffic on the road is fast and pulling over needs care.
