Koshoy-Korgon

Koshoy-Korgon is a rectangular enclosure of rammed earth on the open At-Bashy plain, its walls still standing several metres high in places and running a few hundred metres on each side, with the remains of towers at the corners. Dating is debated, with material suggesting occupation across several medieval centuries on a Silk Road route through the Tien Shan; local tradition ties it to Koshoy, a hero of the Manas epic, and that association carries more weight here than the archaeology. A small museum by the site holds finds and explains the epic connection. There is little to see beyond eroded walls in a big empty landscape, but the setting at 2,500 metres with mountains on both horizons gives it atmosphere.

When to go

May to October; the plain is snowbound and bitterly cold in winter. Morning and evening light suit the earthworks. The site is usually combined with Tash-Rabat on the same day.

Honest expectations

There is not much standing and imagination is required; visitors expecting masonry will be disappointed. Interpretation is thin and mostly in Kyrgyz and Russian. The museum keeps irregular hours. There is no shelter on the plain and wind is constant.
