Karakol and the Ala-Kul Trek

Karakol, a relaxed town near the eastern end of Lake Issyk-Kul, is the trekking capital of Kyrgyzstan and the base for exploring the spectacular central Tian Shan. The town itself charms with its ornate wooden Orthodox cathedral and a unique Chinese-style wooden Dungan mosque built without nails. Above all, though, it is the gateway to superb mountain treks, the most famous being the multi-day hike to Ala-Kul, a breathtaking glacial lake of vivid turquoise cradled at 3,500 metres beneath icy peaks, often combined with the Altyn-Arashan hot springs.

When to go

July to September is the trekking window, when the high passes are clear of snow and the trails accessible; even then, mountain weather is unpredictable and nights are cold, and the high Ala-Kul pass can hold snow. Outside summer, the high routes are impassable. The town is pleasant to visit year-round.

Honest expectations

The Ala-Kul trek is a demanding, multi-day high-altitude hike crossing a pass over 3,900 metres, requiring fitness, proper gear and ideally a guide or clear preparation, so it is not a casual walk; weather can turn quickly. Karakol town itself is modest. For serious trekkers, though, the reward, a jewel-like turquoise glacial lake beneath the peaks, is among Central Asia's most spectacular, and the town a friendly, characterful base.
