๐๏ธ Kosovo: souvenirs
Kosovo's craft streets are compact and genuine - Pec filigree, Pristina's coffee culture and wine from Rahovec. Here is what travellers bring home from Kosovo, where the good versions live, and the export questions worth a look - alongside our 30 written places.
๐ The classic buys
Silver filigree
The filigree tradition of Peja and Prizren - brooches, earrings and boxes twisted from silver wire; workshops sell direct.
Plis (the white felt cap)
The traditional brimless cap, still hand-felted - buy from the remaining makers in Pristina and Gjakova bazaars.
Rahovec wine and rakia
The wine valley's cellars sell vranac and local whites - plus grape and plum rakia.
Handwoven rugs and socks
Wool weaving and the patterned socks of highland tradition - ethnographic-museum shops and bazaars.
Coffee and copper cezve
Kosovo's cafe culture in kit form - roasted beans and a hammered pot.
โ ๏ธ Check before you buy
- Rakia and wine count against allowances - and unlabelled rakia may be questioned; buy labelled.
- Genuinely old items - icons, weapons, Ottoman pieces - need export paperwork; buy new.
โ Better left behind
- Old militaria - trade is murky and border rules unfriendly.
- Anything 'antique' without paperwork.
Keep planning
Markets shift, workshops close and open, and the best souvenir is still the one with a story you were there for. Buy from makers where you can, keep receipts for anything substantial, and when a deal feels too good, it usually is.
