Gracanica was completed in 1321 and is considered one of the finest achievements of late Byzantine architecture: five domes stacked in a rising pyramid over a compact cross-in-square plan, built in alternating stone and brick that gives the exterior its striped warmth. Inside, frescoes from the fourteenth century cover the walls and vaults almost completely, including a celebrated depiction of the Dormition and portraits of the founders. It forms part of the UNESCO listing of Medieval Monuments in Kosovo, and remains an active Serbian Orthodox monastery with a small community of nuns.

What you actually see

  • The five-dome exterior - the tiered pyramid of domes in stone and brick.
  • The fourteenth-century frescoes - near-complete interior painting.
  • The founder portraits - the royal figures in the nave.
  • The monastery grounds - the walled courtyard and gardens.

When to go

Spring through autumn is comfortable for the trip; the interior is dim year round and best seen on a bright day when more light reaches the frescoes. Services are held daily and visitors should time around them.

Honest expectations

This is an active monastery: modest dress is required, shoulders and knees covered, and photography inside is usually prohibited. Visitors should be quiet and unobtrusive. The frescoes are dark and take time for eyes to adjust - do not rush. Visiting hours can be limited and are set by the community rather than posted reliably online.

Nearby

Pristina, the Ulpiana Roman site and the Marble Cave at Gadime.
