The Tana drops off the Mount Kenya highlands here through a series of rapids, and Sagana has grown into Kenya's adventure sports centre as a result. Rafting runs range from gentle family floats to grade five sections depending on water level, with commercial operators running day trips from Nairobi; kayaking, river boarding, cliff jumping, bungee from a platform over the river and a zipline fill out the offer. Camps and simple lodges line the banks, and the standard trip is a weekend from Nairobi with a night under canvas. Water levels vary considerably through the year, and the biggest rapids need the rains; in low water the rafting is tamer. The river valley is green and steep-sided, with the Mount Kenya foothills behind and farmland above the gorge.

What you actually see

  • Whitewater rafting - runs from gentle to grade five depending on flow.
  • The bungee platform - jumps over the river.
  • Riverside camps - tented and simple lodge accommodation on the banks.
  • The Tana gorge - steep green valley below the Mount Kenya foothills.

When to go

Rafting runs year-round, with the biggest water after the rains in April to June and November; low-water months give gentler trips. Weekends are busy with Nairobi groups. Book operators in advance for the bigger runs.

Honest expectations

Safety standards vary between operators; check equipment, guide certification and safety kayaks before booking. Water quality in the Tana is affected by upstream farming and settlement. Accommodation is basic camping for the most part. The river can be closed at extreme flows.

Nearby

Mount Kenya rises north; Karatina and Nyeri lie beyond.
