Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga

In Kikuyu tradition, Gikuyu and Mumbi were placed here by Ngai and had nine daughters from whom the nine clans descend, and the site, a grove around a mukurwe tree, has been the symbolic origin place of the community ever since. A cultural centre with reconstructed traditional homesteads, a shrine area and interpretive material stands on the site, and it is used for cultural events and by visitors wanting to understand the tradition rather than just read about it. Development has been uneven over the years, with periods of neglect and phases of restoration by the county. The setting is the green ridged farmland of Murang'a, with coffee and tea on the slopes, and the site sits in a fold of the hills with the Aberdares behind.
