Sapporo Snow Festival

For one week in early February, Sapporo's central axis becomes a gallery of frozen architecture - the Snow Festival began in 1950 with a handful of student-built snowmen in Odori Park and grew into one of Japan's great winter events, drawing visitors by the million. Along roughly a kilometre and a half of the park, teams including Self-Defense Force engineering units raise building-sized snow sculptures - palaces, temples, pop-culture colossi - lit and projection-mapped after dark, alongside ranks of citizen-carved smaller works. The Susukino site fills the entertainment district with crystalline ice carving, glowing between the neon, while the Tsudome site gives families snow slides and rafts. Around it all runs Sapporo's winter appetite: miso ramen, soup curry, grilled crab and the beer that carries the city's name.

When to go

The festival runs about a week in early February - check the year's dates. Evenings are the show's best hours, when lights and projections wake the sculptures; weekdays thin the crowds a little.

Honest expectations

Book beds months ahead - the city sells out and rates spike hard. Daytime highs sit below freezing and the trodden snow turns to polished ice; spiked shoe-grips from any convenience store are the best few hundred yen of the trip. The park aisles crush at weekends, and the sculptures, wonderful at night, can look grey-shouldered by the festival's last days.
