Muckross House and Gardens

Muckross was built in 1843 for Henry Arthur Herbert and his wife Mary Balfour Herbert, and its most consequential episode came in 1861 when Queen Victoria visited. The Herberts spent six years and an enormous sum preparing - remodelling, redecorating, landscaping - in the expectation of a peerage that never came; the debts contributed to the family losing the estate within twenty years. It passed through the Guinness family and then to Californian owners, the Bourn and Vincent families, who gave it to the state in 1932 as the first Irish national park. The house is shown by guided tour with much of the Victorian interior intact. The gardens are known for rhododendrons and azaleas and a rock garden on natural limestone. Muckross Traditional Farms, a separate ticketed area, recreates 1930s Kerry farms with working animals and no electricity.

When to go

April to October; rhododendrons peak in May. The house runs guided tours at intervals and books up in summer. Grounds and gardens are free and open year-round.

What to expect

The house is guided tour only and slots fill. The farms are a separate ticket and a separate walk. Car parking charges apply. Very busy in summer with coach traffic from Killarney.
