Oceanworld opened in 1996 on Dingle harbour and its strength is that most of what it holds comes from the water outside the door: conger eels, wrasse, rays, lobsters, sea urchins and the other species of the Kerry coast, in tanks that make the point that the Atlantic here is more interesting than people assume. There is a walk-through tunnel with sharks and rays, a penguin colony of gentoos, a touch pool and a reptile section. For decades the aquarium was closely tied to Fungie, the wild bottlenose dolphin that lived in Dingle harbour from 1983 and effectively built the town's tourism, appearing to boats almost daily for thirty-seven years until he vanished in October 2020; the aquarium's interpretation covers him and the harbour's ecology. It is a modest-sized regional aquarium rather than a large national one, and the visit takes about two hours.

What you actually see

  • The local Atlantic species - conger, wrasse, rays and shellfish from the coast outside.
  • The shark tunnel - the walk-through tank with sharks and rays.
  • The gentoo penguins - the colony, with feeding times posted.
  • The Fungie story - the harbour dolphin who disappeared in 2020.

When to go

Any season; indoors throughout, which makes it a reliable wet-weather option in Dingle. Feeding times are posted daily and worth timing for. Busy in summer and school holidays.

Honest expectations

A regional aquarium, smaller than visitors expecting a national attraction anticipate. Two hours at most. Busy and noisy in school holidays. Fungie is gone - boat trips to see him no longer exist.

Nearby

Dingle town and harbour are at the door; Slea Head and the Blasket Centre are west.
