Hengam Island

Hengam lies just south of Qeshm, a low island of about forty square kilometres with a small permanent population, reached by boat from Shibderaz in twenty minutes. Its beaches are the draw, particularly the silver beach on the northern shore where the sand contains reflective mineral grains that glitter, and the water is clear and shallow. Bottlenose dolphins are resident in the strait and boat trips go out to see them, usually early in the morning, with reasonable success rates. A herd of gazelles lives on the island and is often visible on the interior plain. There is a small market selling shells and Bandari clothing, and a few simple places to eat, but almost no development.

When to go

November to March. A day trip from Qeshm. Dolphin trips run at dawn, which means an early start and an overnight on Qeshm nearby. Crossings are cancelled in wind.

Honest expectations

Dolphin trips can be pushy, with boats crowding the animals; choose an operator that keeps distance. Sightings are not guaranteed. There is very little on the island in the way of facilities or shade. Crossings depend on weather.
