The Cliff Graves of Toraja

Around Rantepao the Torajan dead are placed in the rock. At Lemo, a limestone face is drilled with square chambers, and rows of carved wooden figures stand on balconies cut beside them, dressed and facing out over the fields. Londa is a cave and cleft where coffins are stacked and older bones lie exposed, visited with a lamp carried by a local guide. Kete Kesu sets a row of ancestral houses in front of a burial hill of old hanging coffins and rock chambers. At Bori, a field of tall standing stones was raised over generations to mark funerals. These are family graves in use, not ruins, and behaviour matters more than photographs.

When to go

The highlands are green all year with a drier stretch roughly June to September, which is also when the largest ceremonies are held after harvest. Mornings are clearer, and cloud and rain build most afternoons. The sites open through the day, but arrange a guide in advance, both to explain what you are seeing and to know when a place should be left alone.

Honest expectations

These are working family graves, and the exposed bones and coffins at Londa unsettle some visitors while others treat them as a backdrop, which locals notice. Guides, entrance fees and lamp charges are collected at each site and add up. Paths are muddy and steep, the cave is cramped, and a ceremony in progress takes precedence over any visit. A small gift is customary at some sites.
