Lakey is a bay on the southern coast of Sumbawa in the Hu'u district, and its central wave is unusual: Lakey Peak is an A-frame breaking over a shallow reef, meaning the swell peaks and peels both left and right from the same point, so two surfers can take off together and go opposite ways - a formation that is uncommon and much prized. Within the same bay are four more named breaks: Lakey Pipe, a heavy hollow left; Periscopes, a long right; Nungas; and Cobblestones, so a single bay carries a full quiver of options across different tides and swells. The village of losmen grew around them. It is a long drive from anywhere, the reef is shallow, and the accommodation is simple and geared entirely to surfing.

What you actually see

  • An A-frame peak - breaking left and right from the same take-off point.
  • Five breaks in one bay - Peak, Pipe, Periscopes, Nungas and Cobblestones.
  • A surf-only village - losmen and warung built for the waves and nothing else.
  • Shallow reef - the bottom every one of the breaks works over.

When to go

April to October for the swell. A week.

Honest expectations

It is a long drive from Bima or the Sumbawa ferry, and there is nothing here but surfing. Reef is shallow and cuts are routine. Facilities are basic and power can be intermittent.

Nearby

Dompu is north; Tambora is north-west; Bima has the airport.
