The classic buys
Pashmina and shawls
Real Kashmiri pashmina passes through a ring and carries GI-tag labels - state emporia and certified sellers beat tourist-street 'pashmina' by a category.
Block prints and saris
Jaipur's block-printed cottons, Banarasi silk brocades, and the handloom marks that certify the loom.
Spices and tea

Check before you buy
- Antiquities over 100 years old cannot be exported - the Archaeological Survey enforces it; buy new craft and keep receipts.
- Real saffron and pashmina are precision goods - GI tags, sealed packaging and certified sellers are the defence against a famous fake economy.
- Peacock feathers are legal inside India but restricted to export - and sandalwood faces quantity limits; ask before buying big.
✗ Better left behind
- Ivory, shahtoosh shawls and big-cat anything - banned outright, with real enforcement.
- 'Antique' bronzes and temple pieces - protected heritage; the living casters sell better work legally.
Markets shift, workshops close and open, and the best souvenir is still the one with a story you were there for. Buy from makers where you can, keep receipts for anything substantial, and when a deal feels too good, it usually is.
