Nagarhole covers around six hundred and forty square kilometres of moister forest than neighbouring Bandipur, drained by the river that names it, and its southern boundary is the Kabini reservoir, whose backwaters draw large numbers of animals to the shore in the dry months. That makes boat safaris possible, which is unusual, and gives long views of elephant herds, gaur and deer along the water. Tiger and leopard densities here are among the highest recorded in India, and a black leopard photographed in the park became internationally known. The forest is also home to Jenu Kuruba and other Adivasi communities.

What you actually see

  • The Kabini backwaters - animals gathering at the water in the dry season.
  • The boat safaris - viewing from the reservoir rather than a vehicle.
  • The predators - among the highest tiger and leopard densities in India.
  • The elephant herds - large congregations on the shore in summer.

When to go

October to May, with March to May the peak as animals concentrate at the water; the monsoon closes or restricts access. Boat safaris depend on reservoir levels.

Honest expectations

Kabini-side lodges are expensive and book out months ahead. Safari zones and gates are far apart. Black leopard sightings are extremely rare and should not be expected.

Nearby

Bandipur lies southeast; Coorg is northwest.
