Grenjadarstadur

Grenjadarstadur was a wealthy parsonage in Adaldalur, and the turf buildings that survive - most of them from the middle of the nineteenth century - make one of the largest complexes of their kind still standing, a run of connected gables with passages linking rooms behind them. A minister and his household lived here until 1949, and the buildings became a museum in 1958. Inside are farm and domestic tools, a collection of household objects from the district, and rooms laid out as they were used. The church beside it is a separate building of the late nineteenth century, and the churchyard holds one of the oldest gravestones in the country.

June to August, while it is staffed. Two hours.

Things to know

Open in summer only, with limited hours. The interiors are dark and cramped, with low doorways and uneven floors. It is off the main routes in a farming valley. Facilities are minimal.
