Fridheimar

Fridheimar grows tomatoes year round under glass in a country where they cannot grow outdoors: geothermal water heats the houses, hydroelectricity runs the lamps that replace the missing winter daylight, and imported bumblebees do the pollinating. The family opened the greenhouse to visitors and put tables between the rows, so lunch is eaten among the plants - tomato soup with bread, and a menu built almost entirely around the crop. They also keep Icelandic horses and run short shows explaining the breed and its fifth gait, the tolt. Booking for the restaurant is effectively required.

The restaurant requires booking well ahead and turns people away daily in summer. The menu is narrow by design. It is a commercial operation on a busy tourist route, and priced accordingly. The horse show runs at set times.
