Bustarfell

Bustarfell has been in the same family since 1532, which is unusual anywhere, and the turf buildings that stand today were rebuilt after a fire in 1770 and then extended and altered by successive generations until the family moved into a modern house in 1966. That continuity is what the museum has: the rooms are furnished with the household's own things across several centuries, rather than assembled from elsewhere, so the collection reads as one family's accumulation. The red-painted gables against the turf are the image everyone photographs. A cafe operates in an adjoining building in summer, and the descendants still farm the land.

Good to know

It is open only in summer and closed the rest of the year. Rooms are small, dark and low. It is a long way from the ring road up a fjord valley. The working farm around it is private.
