Lake Velence

Velence is the practical lake for anyone based in Budapest who does not want the drive to Balaton. It is shallow, rarely more than shoulder deep, which means it warms early and stays warm into September, and it is small enough to see the far shore from any beach. The southern side carries the resort strip of Gardony, Agard and Velence, with managed swimming areas, jetties and a cycle path along most of the shoreline. The northern third is different: a dense reed system, largely closed, that supports nesting herons, grebes and warblers. Behind it rise low granite hills around Sukoro, where weathered boulders sit in oak scrub above the water.

What you actually see

• The swimming beaches - shallow managed strands at Agard, Gardony and Velence with jetties and grass.
• The reed bird reserve - the closed northern section, viewed from marked points and boardwalks.
• The granite boulders at Sukoro - rounded weathered rock in the low hills above the north shore.
• The shoreline cycle path - a flat loop route linking the resort villages and the reed edge.

When to go

Late June to August for swimming, when the water is genuinely warm and the beaches staffed. May and September suit cycling and birdwatching, with far fewer people. Weekdays are much quieter than weekends, when Budapest empties onto this shore. Beaches keep short seasonal hours, and most services shut from October, leaving the path and the reeds.

Honest expectations

The water is warm because it is shallow, and shallow also means murky, weedy in places and quick to warm past pleasant in a heatwave. Algae blooms happen in hot summers. The south shore is built up with holiday plots and offers little scenery. Beach entry is charged separately at most points, parking too. The bird reserve is closed, so casual visitors see reeds rather than birds.

Szekesfehervar with its old centre lies just west, and Budapest is an hour away by train.
