The Heritage Museum opened in Sha Tin in 2000 in a large courtyard building and covers Hong Kong culture broadly rather than any single subject. Its strongest permanent gallery is devoted to Cantonese opera, with a reconstructed bamboo theatre stage, costume, and recordings that explain a form inscribed on the UNESCO intangible heritage list. A second permanent gallery is given to the novelist Jin Yong, whose martial arts serials shaped popular fiction across the Chinese-speaking world, with manuscripts, editions and adaptations. Alongside these run galleries on New Territories history and changing exhibitions on Hong Kong popular culture, film and design, which are often the reason to visit.

What you actually see

  • The Cantonese opera gallery - a reconstructed bamboo theatre stage and costume.
  • The Jin Yong gallery - manuscripts and editions of the martial arts serials.
  • New Territories history - the rural side of the territory's past.
  • Changing popular culture exhibitions - film, music and design shows.

When to go

Year round. Two to three hours. Closed Tuesdays. Weekends bring family crowds to the children's section.

Honest expectations

It is out in Sha Tin and takes real travel time from the centre. Some galleries feel dated. Special exhibitions are ticketed separately and popular ones queue. Labelling depth varies between galleries.

Nearby

Che Kung temple is adjacent; Sha Tin town centre lies east.
