Chun Yeung Street Market

Chun Yeung Street in North Point is an ordinary Hong Kong wet market, fish on ice, live poultry, vegetables, fruit and butchers under awnings, with one thing that makes it unlike any other: the tram line runs straight down the middle of it. Trams come through several times an hour, and the stalls, the awnings and the shoppers stand within centimetres of the passing car, pulling back baskets as it goes and closing in again behind it. Riding the tram through the market from the upper deck is the standard way visitors experience it. The surrounding streets carry a strong Fujianese character from decades of settlement, with the food shops to match.

It is a working market and traders dislike cameras in their faces. Wet market floors are wet and slippery, and live poultry sections are not for the squeamish. The street is genuinely tight and standing to photograph blocks people who are shopping.
