Marshall Falls

Marshall Falls is not a single drop but a run of rapids and chutes on a creek off the Mazaruni, an hour upriver from Bartica by boat and then a short walk through forest. The water comes down over rock into a pool that is the main swimming spot in the area and the reason people make the trip. Gold and diamond dredging works parts of this river system, which is visible on the way up.

What you actually see

• The rapids - water running down over rock ledges into a pool.
• The swimming pool - the main basin at the foot of the chutes.
• The boat trip - an hour up the Mazaruni from Bartica through forest.
• The forest walk - a short path in from the landing.

When to go

September to April is the drier season with lower, safer water. In the wet months from May to August the flow is dangerous for swimming. Boat hire is easiest arranged in Bartica in the morning.

Honest expectations

Boat hire is the main cost and prices should be agreed before setting off. The river carries mining activity and the water is not always clear. There are no facilities at the falls.
