Grutas del Rey Marcos

The Rey Marcos cave near San Juan Chamelco is entered with a helmet, a lamp and boots, and the route runs a few hundred metres into the hill along an underground stream, wading in places, climbing over rock in others, with stalactites, columns and flowstone through the passage and a small waterfall inside. It is a wet, hands-on cave rather than a walkway with railings, which is much of the appeal, and guides take groups through on a fixed route. The Q'eqchi' communities around Coban have long used caves ceremonially and the region is riddled with them. It is easily combined with the Chamelco church and the country south of Coban.

When to go

November to April in the dry season; the cave can close after heavy rain when water levels rise. Two hours. Visits are guided at set times.

Good to know

You get wet and muddy; bring clothes and shoes you do not mind soaking. The route involves stooping, climbing and some tight spots, and is not suitable for anyone claustrophobic. It closes in heavy rain. Groups can be large.
