Habitation Murat

Habitation Murat outside Grand-Bourg was the largest sugar estate on Marie-Galante, worked by several hundred enslaved people at its height in the early nineteenth century. The master's house has been restored and holds an ecomuseum on the island's sugar economy and on the lives of those who were forced to work it, and the windmill tower, the boiling house and the estate ruins stand around it, with a medicinal plant garden laid out in the grounds.

When to go

December to April is the driest. The museum keeps daytime hours and closes on some days. Mornings are coolest.

Honest expectations

Labelling is in French. The subject is the slavery the estate ran on and the museum does not soften it. Opening days vary and should be checked.
