Habitation Murat outside Grand-Bourg was the largest sugar estate on Marie-Galante, worked by several hundred enslaved people at its height in the early nineteenth century. The master's house has been restored and holds an ecomuseum on the island's sugar economy and on the lives of those who were forced to work it, and the windmill tower, the boiling house and the estate ruins stand around it, with a medicinal plant garden laid out in the grounds.

What you actually see

  • The master's house - the restored residence holding the ecomuseum.
  • The windmill tower - the surviving mill that ground the estate's cane.
  • The estate ruins - the boiling house and outbuildings around the site.
  • The plant garden - the medicinal and useful species laid out in the grounds.

When to go

December to April is the driest. The museum keeps daytime hours and closes on some days. Mornings are coolest.

Honest expectations

Labelling is in French. The subject is the slavery the estate ran on and the museum does not soften it. Opening days vary and should be checked.

Nearby

Grand-Bourg is south, and Gueule Grand Gouffre is north.
