Bia National Park

Bia lies in the western corner of Ghana near the Ivorian border, a national park with an adjoining resource reserve designated together as a UNESCO biosphere reserve, protecting moist semi-deciduous forest that includes some of the tallest and oldest trees remaining in the country, emergents standing well above a closed canopy. Forest elephants, bongo, chimpanzee and several monkey species are recorded, and over two hundred bird species and hundreds of butterflies. As at Ankasa, mammals are difficult to see and the experience is the forest itself, walked on trails with a park guide. Facilities are minimal: a camp near the headquarters and simple accommodation in Debiso. Visitor numbers are very low.

History

Bia was created in 1935, named after the Bia River that drains it, and became a national park in 1974; intensive farming had destroyed much of its original vegetation, but since 1975 no farming or logging has taken place, and in 1985 it was named a biosphere reserve (Wikipedia, Bia National Park).

When to go

December to March in the drier months, when tracks are passable and walking easier. The rains close much of the access. Early morning gives the best chance of primates and birds.

Practical notes

Elephants and chimpanzees are present but almost never seen. Facilities are very basic and supplies must be brought. Access roads are poor and the park is a long way from anywhere. Guides are required and arranged at headquarters.
