Neuschwanstein is the fairytale castle par excellence, a vision of white towers, turrets and pinnacles rising from a wooded crag in the Bavarian Alps, built in the nineteenth century for the reclusive, dreaming King Ludwig II. Never truly finished and lived in only briefly, its romantic silhouette against the mountains inspired storybook castles the world over and draws visitors from every corner of the earth.

What you actually see

  • The castle silhouette - the white turreted castle against the Alpine backdrop.
  • The interior tour - the lavish, dreamlike rooms Ludwig created.
  • The Marienbrucke - the bridge over a gorge with the classic castle view.
  • The Alpine setting - the lakes, mountains and Hohenschwangau castle nearby.

When to go

Late spring to autumn for the best weather and open access; winter is beautiful with snow but access can be limited. Book a timed tour ahead, as tickets are timed and sell out, and go early.

Honest expectations

It is extremely popular, so you must book a timed tour ahead; you cannot simply walk in, and the interior is seen only on a short, brisk guided tour. It is reached by a steep walk or shuttle. The famous viewpoint bridge sometimes closes, so check.

Nearby

Hohenschwangau castle and its lakes are alongside; Fussen and the Alps are nearby.
