Hedeby Viking Museum

Hedeby stood at the narrowest point of the Jutland peninsula, where goods could be carried between the Baltic and the North Sea routes, and it grew into the largest urban settlement of the Viking Age in northern Europe with perhaps fifteen hundred inhabitants. It was destroyed and abandoned in the eleventh century and never rebuilt over, so the site is a semicircular rampart around empty ground with the archaeology intact beneath. UNESCO listed it in 2018 with the Danevirke, a defensive earthwork running west from it. The museum holds finds including a reconstructed ship, and seven houses have been rebuilt on the shore.

When to go

April to October; the reconstructed houses and living history are staffed in season. The museum opens year-round with reduced winter hours.

What to expect

The town site itself is empty grass; everything visible is museum or reconstruction. Houses are staffed seasonally. The site is exposed to wind.
