Babelsberg Park and Palace
A neo-Gothic palace in a park two landscape architects fought over, one of them dismissed mid-project.

Prince Wilhelm, later the first German emperor, had Karl Friedrich Schinkel design a summer palace here from 1833 in an English neo-Gothic manner, and used it for decades. The park was begun by Peter Joseph Lenné, but the prince's wife Augusta found his plans too formal and too expensive; Lenné was dismissed and Hermann von Pückler-Muskau took over from 1843, reshaping the ground with long views, a pumped water system feeding cascades and lakes, and planting that frames the Havel. The result is one of the most important nineteenth-century landscape parks in Germany, UNESCO-listed with the other Potsdam palaces in 1990.
