Langoué Baï

Langoué Baï is a marshy clearing in the forest of Ivindo National Park, found in 2000 during Mike Fay's walk across Central Africa, and it functions as a gathering point: western lowland gorillas, forest elephants, sitatunga and forest buffalo come out of the trees onto the open ground for the minerals in the soil. A viewing platform overlooks it. Ivindo was inscribed by UNESCO in 2021, and the baï is one of the reasons.

When to go

June to September is the long dry season and the practical window. The rains make access very difficult. Animals use the baï through the day, with mornings and evenings best.

Things to know

Getting there takes a full day from Makokou including a forest walk of several hours. Facilities are a basic camp and a platform. Sightings vary and quiet is essential.
