A short distance outside Mouila in the Ngounié province lies a small lake in a depression in the forest, deep and clear enough that the water reads as an intense blue against the surrounding green, which is what gives it its name. It is used for swimming and picnicking by people from the town. The setting is quiet forest with a track down to the shore, and there is nothing built at the site.

What you actually see

  • The blue water - depth and clarity giving the lake its colour.
  • The forest setting - woodland running down to the shore on all sides.
  • The swimming - the use the lake gets from people in Mouila.
  • The short access - a track down from the road a few kilometres out of town.

When to go

June to September is the drier season and the easiest for access. The rains make the track difficult. Weekends bring local visitors.

Honest expectations

The lake is small and an hour covers it. There are no facilities of any kind. The track in is rough after rain.

Nearby

Mouila is nearby, and the Chutes de l'Impératrice are north.
