๐๏ธ French Polynesia: souvenirs
Tahiti's black pearls are the territory's signature - graded like diamonds and best bought where the farms are. Here is what travellers bring home from French Polynesia, where the good versions live, and the export questions worth a look - alongside our 48 written places.
๐ The classic buys
Tahitian black pearls
Farmed in the Tuamotu lagoons - buy graded and certified in Papeete or at farms on Rangiroa and Fakarava; lustre matters more than size.
Monoi oil
Coconut oil infused with tiare flowers, made to an official origin standard - supermarkets sell the classic bottles cheaply.
Pareu
Hand-painted or printed wraps - the Papeete market's upper floor is full of them; hand-painted ones are signed.
Vanilla
Tahitian vanilla is its own species, plumper and more floral - buy pods from Taha'a or the market, vacuum-packed.
Carving and tifaifai
Marquesan wood and bone carving, and applique tifaifai quilts - buy from artisan associations; each island has a style.
โ ๏ธ Check before you buy
- Pearls should come with a certificate - it matters for value and customs; keep receipts.
- Check rules on shell and coral items - many are restricted; carved mother-of-pearl is usually fine.
โ Better left behind
- Cheap dyed pearls sold as Tahitian - real ones are never bargain-bin.
- Turtle-shell anything - banned.
Keep planning
Markets shift, workshops close and open, and the best souvenir is still the one with a story you were there for. Buy from makers where you can, keep receipts for anything substantial, and when a deal feels too good, it usually is.
