Sabeto Hot Springs and Mud Pools

In the Sabeto valley behind Nadi, geothermal water feeds a set of shallow mud pools run by the local village, and the ritual is fixed: wade into the first pool and coat yourself thoroughly in warm grey mud, stand in the sun until it cracks and flakes, then rinse it off in successively hotter thermal pools while everyone else does the same, all of you looking absurd. Fijians have used the springs for generations, and the operation is straightforward and cheerful rather than spa-like. Most visitors combine it with the neighbouring Garden of the Sleeping Giant, an orchid garden founded by the actor Raymond Burr.

When to go

The dry season from May to October makes the sun-drying step reliable, which matters more than it sounds. Mornings are quieter; midday brings tour groups from the Denarau resorts. Rain turns the site messy in the less enjoyable sense.

Honest expectations

Facilities are basic - changing areas and rinse showers are simple, so bring a towel, flip-flops and clothes you do not mind staining, as the mud can mark swimwear permanently. The pools are shared and the water is not filtered or treated; anyone with open wounds or a compromised immune system should skip it. Tipping and small donations to the village are customary and the money stays local.
