House on Fire is a venue in the Malkerns Valley built by hand over years out of stone, mosaic, carved wood and cast bronze, borrowing from Shakespeare's Globe in its round form and from local sculpture in everything else, so that the building is as much the attraction as what happens in it. It hosts theatre, music and the Bushfire festival at the end of May, which fills the surrounding fields.

What you actually see

  • The hand-built structure - stone, mosaic, carved wood and bronze assembled over years.
  • The round form - a plan borrowed from Shakespeare's Globe.
  • The sculpture - carved and cast work built into the fabric throughout.
  • Bushfire - the festival that fills the grounds at the end of May.

When to go

Year round for a look at the building. Bushfire falls at the end of May. Performances run irregularly through the year and are worth checking.

Honest expectations

Outside events there is nothing happening and the visit is just the building. Bushfire tickets and accommodation sell out well ahead. The site is a working venue and access depends on what is being set up.

Nearby

Malkerns Valley is around it, and Manzini is east.
