Smoke Sauna Tradition of Võrumaa

The suitsusaun - smoke sauna - has no chimney. The stove is fired for hours until the stones glow, the smoke filling the room and blackening the walls before it is let out, and only then do people go in, into soft heat that smells of tar and birch. In 2014 UNESCO inscribed the smoke sauna tradition of Võrumaa on its intangible heritage list - not the buildings, but the whole practice around them.

What you actually see

• The building - a low log sauna, often by a pond, with a soot-black interior and benches worn smooth.
• The firing - a chimneyless stove heated for hours until the stones glow, the smoke let out only when the room is ready.
• The session - steam, whisking with birch branches, rest and cold water, repeated through half a day.
• The rafters - where families smoked meat, which is why sauna meat remains a Võrumaa specialty.

When to go

Year-round, though winter is the classic season, when the contrast between the heat and the cold outside is the whole point. It has to be booked ahead in any season: several Võrumaa farm families open their smoke saunas to visitors by arrangement, the Mooska farm near Haanja being the best known, and the host sets the rhythm. A spa's Finnish sauna is a different thing entirely, and a real suitsusaun cannot be improvised in an afternoon.

Honest expectations

The heat is gentler than a Finnish sauna but the session is longer and more ritualised, and everything you wear or bring will smell of smoke afterwards. Soot marks are part of the deal.

This is a living custom offered by hosts rather than a drop-in attraction, and it carries meaning beyond hygiene: saunas were where children were born, where the sick were treated and where the dead were washed. Hosts who keep the custom treat it accordingly.

Suur Munamägi, Rõuge and the Haanja uplands are all in the same corner of Võrumaa. Setomaa and its own traditions are under an hour east.
