When to go
Year-round, thanks to the warm climate; spring and autumn are ideal, avoiding both the fierce summer heat and the cooler, windier winter water. The reefs are close to shore, so even snorkellers see plenty.

The resorts are heavily developed package-holiday hubs, which is either convenient or off-putting depending on taste. Some reefs near busy resorts show damage, so choose operators that protect them. Beyond the reef and beach, the resort strips can feel isolated from real Egyptian life.
