Elephantine sits in the river opposite Aswan and was the frontier settlement of Egypt for millennia, the point where the country ended and Nubia began, and the excavated southern end of the island is a dense stack of that history: a temple of Khnum, the ram-headed god of the cataract, a small Ptolemaic temple, the foundations of a Jewish garrison community known from a famous archive of Aramaic papyri, houses of many periods one on top of another, and a Nilometer with steps and scale marks cut down to the water. A museum sits in the old villa of the excavation house. The northern part of the island holds two Nubian villages, Siou and Koti, with painted houses and lanes that are the reason many visitors cross.

What you actually see

  • The Khnum temple ruins - the cataract god's sanctuary on the island.
  • A stepped Nilometer - measuring scale cut down to the water.
  • Stacked settlement layers - houses of many periods excavated together.
  • Nubian villages - painted houses and lanes at the northern end.

When to go

October to April. Half a day. Late afternoon for the villages and the light on the water; mornings for the archaeological site before the heat. The public ferry runs constantly and costs almost nothing.

Honest expectations

The archaeological area is complex and hard to read without a plan; signage is limited. The villages are people's homes and photographing houses and children without asking is intrusive. Guides on the corniche overcharge; the public ferry is a fraction of a private boat.

Nearby

The botanical garden is on the next island; the Old Cataract Hotel faces the site.
