Mando is a small island of about forty residents in the Danish Wadden Sea, and the way in is the point: a causeway across the tidal flats from Vester Vedsted that is underwater at high tide and passable for a few hours either side of low water, so every visit is timed to the tide table. A tractor-drawn bus runs the crossing for those who would rather not drive it. The island has a village, a church, a windmill, a dyke that can be walked round in a couple of hours, and salt meadows and mudflats that carry enormous numbers of waders and geese, particularly on spring and autumn passage. The Wadden Sea is a World Heritage Site and Mando sits inside it.

What you actually see

  • The tidal causeway - a road that floods twice a day.
  • The tractor bus - the traditional crossing over the flats.
  • Wader and goose flocks - the mudflats on passage and in winter.
  • A dyke walk round the island - the whole circuit in a couple of hours.

When to go

April to October for the crossing and the walking; spring and autumn for the biggest bird numbers. Half a day, timed strictly to the tide. Check tide tables before setting out and allow margin.

Honest expectations

Cars are regularly caught and ruined by the tide on this causeway; take the times seriously and do not gamble. Facilities on the island amount to a cafe and a small shop with short seasons. There is no shelter on the flats. Winter access is unreliable.

Nearby

Ribe is inland to the north-east; Fano lies north along the coast.
