Hluboka Castle

Hluboka is the most photographed chateau in the country and the least Czech-looking: a long white facade of battlements, pinnacles and slender towers on a wooded bluff above the Vltava. A medieval castle stood here for centuries, but what you see is a mid-19th-century rebuild by the Schwarzenberg family, who admired English Tudor Gothic and had the whole thing recast to match. The interiors kept that ambition, with carved wooden ceilings, leather wall coverings, a hunting hall stacked with antlers and a library running to thousands of volumes. Below the walls a landscaped park drops towards the river, and the former riding hall now holds a gallery of Gothic panel painting and Bohemian art.

What you actually see

• The white facade - the battlemented front with its pinnacles and corner towers, best seen from the park below.
• The state interiors - carved ceilings, tapestries and the antler-hung hunting hall on the guided route.
• The riding hall gallery - Gothic panel painting and Bohemian art in the converted stables across the courtyard.
• The park and river view - landscaped grounds sloping to the Vltava, with a large fishpond at the foot of the hill.

When to go

April to October covers the full range of guided routes, since several interior circuits run only in the main season and the castle closes on Mondays for much of the year. Mornings are calmer than afternoons, when coach groups arrive from Ceske Budejovice and Cesky Krumlov. Autumn gives the best light on the white walls against the woods.

Honest expectations

Interiors are accessible only on timed guided tours, and English-language slots are limited, so you may wait or take a printed translation. The chateau is a fake in the strict sense, a nineteenth-century reworking rather than a medieval survival, which disappoints some. Parking sits well below the gate and the walk up is steep.

Ceske Budejovice and its arcaded square are ten kilometres south, and the Hluboka fishponds lie at the foot of the hill.
