Frydlant Castle

Frydlant stands in the narrow strip of Czech land that pushes north between Germany and Poland, and it is two buildings pretending to be one: a grey medieval castle with a round tower on the high point of the rock, and a red and white sgraffito chateau built against it by later owners who wanted something more comfortable. Because the family that held it for generations opened the rooms to visitors unusually early, the interiors were preserved as an arranged display rather than emptied and reassembled later, and they still show that layered look, with armour halls, a vaulted kitchen, panelled dining rooms and family portraits. The round tower can be climbed for a view over the Jizera foothills.

When to go

May to September for the full set of tour routes, since several circuits run only in high summer and the castle reduces hours or closes from November. Tours run in Czech with printed English text, so buying a ticket for a set departure time matters. Mondays are usually closed year-round.

Honest expectations

Everything is seen on a guided tour at a fixed pace, and English-speaking guides are not guaranteed. Frydlant sits a long way from anything else on a tourist route, which makes it a dedicated trip rather than a stop. The town itself is quiet and worn, with limited places to eat outside the main square.

Nearby

Liberec and the Jested ridge are half an hour south, and the Jizera Mountains rise to the east.
