Kuterevo Bear Refuge

Kuterevo is a small Velebit village that took in orphaned brown bear cubs decades ago and never stopped. The refuge is not a zoo in the commercial sense: enclosures are large wooded plots on the hillside, visitors watch from timber walkways above the fence line, and the bears are deliberately not trained, fed on demand or made to perform. Most of the residents arrived as cubs that could not have survived alone, and none can be released. Volunteers, often international, run the daily work and usually do the explaining. The whole place is built from local timber and reclaimed materials, with carved wooden figures scattered through the grounds.

What you actually see

• The enclosures - large fenced sections of hillside forest where the bears live with minimal human contact.
• The raised walkways - timber viewing platforms that keep visitors above and away from the animals.
• The volunteer camp - workshops, carved figures and hand built structures made by successive groups of volunteers.
• The Velebit setting - the village sits in a high valley below the mountain, with pastures and old wooden barns.

When to go

May to October, when the refuge is staffed and the road is easy. Bears are most active in the cooler hours, so morning or late afternoon gives a better chance of seeing them out. They den down in the coldest months, so a winter visit may show you nothing at all. Check opening days before driving out.

Honest expectations

This is not a polished attraction. There are no scheduled feedings, no guaranteed sightings, and the bears frequently sleep out of view in the trees. Facilities are minimal and the walkways are rough timber. Entry is by donation but the place clearly depends on it. Anyone expecting a zoo experience with close animal contact will be disappointed, which is deliberate.

Otocac and the Gacka river valley are half an hour away, and Northern Velebit National Park is above the village.
