Getting thereAbout 35 km inland from Limon in the Talamanca foothills
EntryCharged; packages including tram and guided walks

Veragua occupies around thirteen square kilometres of rainforest in the Talamanca foothills behind Limon, run as a visitor park with a research component: a field station works with universities on amphibians, insects and forest ecology, and the specimens and the findings feed the exhibits. Visitors see enclosures and exhibition houses for frogs, snakes, butterflies, insects and hummingbirds, take an aerial tram down into a gorge and walk trails to a waterfall. It functions as a cruise excursion from Limon as well as an independent visit. The forest is genuinely wet and the wildlife exhibits are the reliable part, since seeing animals in the forest itself is a matter of luck.

What you actually see

  • The exhibit houses - the frog, snake, insect and butterfly displays.
  • The aerial tram - the ride down into the forested gorge.
  • The waterfall trail - the walk to the fall in the reserve.
  • The research station - the working field laboratory on site.

When to go

February to April and September to October are the least wet windows on the Caribbean side; rain is likely in any month. Cruise days bring large groups and are worth avoiding. Early starts are quieter.

Honest expectations

Much of what is seen is in enclosures rather than in the wild. Cruise excursion days crowd the site. Packages are priced high and unbundling them is awkward. The access road is long and rough in places.

Nearby

Limon lies northeast; Cahuita is south on the coast.
