The Bribri Territory

The Bribri are the largest indigenous people in Costa Rica, living in territories in the Talamanca hills on both the Caribbean slope and, with the closely related Cabécar, deeper into the range. Their society is matrilineal: clan membership passes through the mother, and only women of certain clans may prepare cacao for ceremonial use, which is why cacao sits at the centre of both the economy and the cosmology here. The awá, a healer trained over many years, holds the medical and spiritual knowledge. Several communities run their own visits, showing cacao processing, medicinal plants, waterfalls and the stilt houses, with the income staying local.

When to go

September and October are driest on this coast, with February to April a second window. Visits must be arranged in advance through community organisations rather than turning up; several operate out of Puerto Viejo and Bribri town.

Honest expectations

These are inhabited territories with their own governance, not attractions: arrive through a community organisation, pay the fee, and ask before photographing anyone. Some operators sell Bribri experiences with no community involvement and no money reaching the villages; ask directly who is running it. Roads into the hills are rough and impassable after rain.
