Tricao is a private park of around a hundred hectares near Santo Domingo, opened to the public in 2018 after years of planting, and its centrepiece is an aviary that visitors walk through rather than look into - a series of large netted enclosures holding several thousand birds of a few hundred species, with the paths running inside. The park also has an artificial crystalline lagoon of the kind pioneered in Chile, gardens, a rose collection and cycling routes. It is a designed private attraction rather than a nature reserve, which is the honest description, and it is priced and booked accordingly.

Booking is required and slots sell out at weekends. Entry is not cheap and some activities cost extra. Keeping large numbers of birds in enclosures is a matter some visitors will weigh. It is a drive from Santiago.
