Concha y Toro was founded at Pirque in 1883 by Melchor Concha y Toro, who brought vines and expertise from Bordeaux, and it is now the largest wine producer in Latin America and one of the largest in the world by volume. The estate keeps the original house and park, and the tour goes through them to the old cellar - the Casillero del Diablo, the devil's locker, where the story is that the founder, tired of wine disappearing, put out the word that the devil kept his cellar there and the pilfering stopped. Whether or not it happened, the name became the company's best selling label worldwide.

What you actually see

  • A winery founded in 1883 - with vines and method from Bordeaux.
  • The original house and park - kept on the Pirque estate.
  • The Casillero del Diablo cellar - and the story that named it.
  • A brand built on that story - now sold worldwide.

When to go

Year round; March and April for the harvest. Half a day.

Honest expectations

Tours are commercial, scheduled and must be booked, and this is a very large operation rather than a boutique estate. The bottling and production side is not what you see. Groups can be large. Prices are higher than at smaller wineries.

Nearby

Santiago is north-west; the Cajon del Maipo road runs east.
