Point of Sand

Point of Sand is the eastern tip of Little Cayman, a spit where the currents from either side meet and drop sand, tinged pink from crushed shell and coral, with shallow clear water on both flanks and Cayman Brac visible about eleven kilometres across the channel. There is a shelter, a couple of tables and nothing else. Turtles nest here in season and the snorkelling off the point is good when the water is calm, though the channel current means care is needed. Most days there is nobody at all, which on an island of two hundred people is not surprising.

• The sand spit - pink-tinged, with water on both sides.
• Cayman Brac across the channel - the bluff visible eleven kilometres away.
• Turtle nesting - on the spit through the summer months.
• The snorkelling - off the point when conditions are calm.

When to go

November to May is the calmest. Turtle nesting runs through the summer. Mornings are flattest. The track out is rough and slow, which is part of why it is empty.

Good to know

The channel current off the point is real and swimmers get caught out; stay inshore unless conditions are flat. There is no shade beyond one shelter, no water and no facilities. The access track is rough. Turtle nests are marked in season and should not be walked over.
