Khwai

Khwai is a community trust area bordering Moremi Game Reserve on the northern side, run by the village that was moved out of the reserve when it was created. The wildlife moves freely between the two, the Khwai river runs along the boundary with a well-known wooden bridge over it, and because this is community land rather than a national park, night drives and off-road driving are allowed here where they are not next door. That combination is why it is one of the most popular self-drive destinations in the country.

What you actually see

• The Khwai river - permanent water along the boundary with Moremi.
• The wooden bridge - the log crossing over the river, a landmark of the area.
• The night drives - permitted on community land, unlike inside the reserve.
• The wild dogs and leopard - both regularly seen along the river frontage.

When to go

May to October is the dry season, with animals concentrated on the river. The rains from November to April bring green country and newborn antelope. July to September is the busiest period.

Honest expectations

Popularity has caught up with it and vehicle numbers at good sightings can be high. Campsites are basic and must be booked well ahead. Deep sand on the approach tracks needs a properly equipped four-wheel drive.
