The Rama valley was dammed in 1968 and the reservoir that filled it covers the valley floor and the villages that were on it, with the water reaching up to the surrounding slopes. On a promontory that the flooding turned into a near-island stands the Franciscan monastery of Scit, whose community has been in the Rama since the fifteenth century and which was moved and rebuilt as the water rose; the church holds the Rama Madonna and a collection of the region's material. The lake is used for swimming, boating and fishing, with campsites and pensions on the shore, and the surrounding highlands carry walking routes. Water levels change with the hydroelectric operation.

What you actually see

  • The Scit monastery - the Franciscan house on the promontory.
  • The reservoir - the water filling the drowned Rama valley.
  • Shore camps - the campsites and pensions around the lake.
  • The Rama highlands - the hills rising around the water.

When to go

May to September for swimming and boating; the water warms by midsummer. Levels are highest in spring. The monastery is open year round though winter roads can be difficult.

Honest expectations

Levels vary considerably and can leave the shore muddy and exposed. Facilities are basic campsites and pensions. The monastery is a working religious house. Access roads are winding.

Nearby

Jablanica lies southeast; Prozor is on the lake.
