1. Belgium: chocolate as civic duty

2. Switzerland: the fondue defence

5. Vienna: cake with a court case

Sachertorte comes with Vienna's best story - two institutions litigated for years over the original recipe - and the proper experience is the full coffee house liturgy: marble table, melange, newspaper, zero hurry. Apple strudel argues for equal billing; order both and adjudicate.

6. Italy: the gelato pilgrimage

Gelato closes the list because it closes every Italian evening: the passeggiata stroll ends at the gelateria, and the connoisseur signals - muted pistachio, flat steel tubs, short seasonal menus - separate the artisans from the tourist mountains. One cone per town is the honest research minimum.
