Bali or Thailand First?
Southeast Asia's two favourite first trips promise similar photos and deliver different journeys. One island of temples versus a whole country of options.

Bali and Thailand share the brochure: temples, beaches, green rice, cheap massages, great food. The difference is shape. Bali is one island with one culture; Thailand is a whole country of alternatives. That single fact should decide most first trips.
What Bali actually is
Bali is Indonesia's Hindu island, and its culture is the attraction: daily offerings on every doorstep, temple festivals that block traffic beautifully, and a landscape of volcano cones and terraced rice that looks art-directed. Base in Ubud for the green heart, the coast for surf and beach clubs, and day-trip to clifftop temples. Distances are small; you unpack once or twice.
Bali's catches deserve honesty: traffic in the south is genuinely bad, the famous beaches are more surf than swimming-pool calm, and the island's popularity means the signature sights come with queues for the photo spot.
What Thailand actually is
Thailand is a menu. Bangkok's gilded chaos, the temple-and-mountain north around Chiang Mai, and two different seas of islands and limestone coasts in the south, from party famous to hammock quiet. Food is the deepest in the region, street level up, transport is easy and cheap, and the tourist machine is the smoothest in Asia: whatever style of trip you want, Thailand stocks it.
The catch is choice itself: a two-week first trip spends real hours on internal hops, and the famous islands in peak season are not the empty-beach photo that sold them.
The honest split
One relaxed base, culture ambient around the pool, minimal logistics: Bali. Variety, food as the headline, cities plus jungle plus islands in one itinerary: Thailand. Surfers lean Bali; divers and beach-hoppers lean Thailand's Andaman coast around Railay and Krabi. Seasons matter more than loyalty: roughly, Bali shines in the middle of the year, Thailand from November to March - check the when-to-go pages against your dates.
Either way, pack the beach and tropics kits, eat where the queue is local per the street-food rules, and accept the universal truth of both destinations: you will be back for the other one.
