Taneka Villages
Hillside villages in northern Benin where priests keep a distinct dress and practice.

The Taneka villages sit on hillsides between Djougou and Natitingou, round houses with conical thatch built up the slope in clusters, and they are known for the position their religious specialists hold: priests who wear little but a goatskin and smoke long pipes, and who look after the shrines the villages are organised around. Access is controlled by the village and a guide from it is required.

When to go
November to February is the cool dry season. Access must be arranged with the village. The rains from May make the climb difficult.
What to expect
A village guide is mandatory and fees are set on the day. Photography of the priests is charged and sometimes refused. The arrangement makes some visitors uncomfortable, since people's daily life is the attraction.
